Thesis (Psy.D.)--Marywood University, 2011.
Supervision is one of the most vital aspects in the development of psychologists, as most all clinicians will either receive or provide supervision to others during their careers (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009; Norcross, Hedges, & Castle, 2002). Although there is abundant research examining the supervisory relationship, little research has considered exploring the needs of trainees (Delaney & Moore, 1966; Muse-Burke & Tyson, 2010). Additionally, even less research has been aimed at developing scales that measure trainee needs in supervision (Muse-Burke & Tyson, 2010). Given the scarcity of research considering trainee needs, the current research aimed to study the relationship among supervisee needs, supervisor self-disclosures, supervisory style, and the supervisory working alliance. Furthermore, this study aimed to further validate the Supervisee Needs Index, a new measure of trainee needs (Muse-Burke & Tyson, 2010). One-hundred-forty-one graduate students in doctoral level professional psychology programs who were completing their pre-doctoral internship or postdoctoral fellowship during Fall 2010 participated in the study. It was expected that trainees whose supervisors utilize self-disclosure, have an attractive and interpersonally sensitive style, and have a strong working alliance would report higher likelihoods of their needs being met in supervision. Results of the study found that the interpersonally sensitive substyle of supervisory style was the most significant contributor to supervisee needs. Furthermore, the attractive subtype of supervisory style as well as the goal subtype of the working alliance had a significant relationship with supervisee needs. It was also found that supervisor self-disclosure did not significantly impact supervisee needs.
