The problem of the decline of public discourse and erosion of community is examined in the first chapter with a focus on the lack of meaningful talk and community in schools. The possibilities of nurturing community and serious discussion of important issues in the classroom are explored. The effects of domination on community development and discussion are also considered. Literature is reviewed in the areas of research on discussion in social studies and language arts, research on language and gender, and methods of discourse analysis. The methodology for the study was a descriptive case study of one middle school, social studies classroom with discourse analysis of three class discussions. Data were gathered over six weeks in 1992. Data collection was focused on three discussions involving the entire class. Additional data were collected to provide the context for those discussions.

The most important conclusions of this study are that community development supports discussion, and that discussion can either support or detract from community. Other conclusions are drawn about types of discussion and student participation. This study was limited by the short observation period (six weeks), the method used to record discussions, and the difficulties of combining participant observation of context with discourse analysis of discussions. The implications of the study for research and practice which are presented in the final chapter. The central implication is that discussion is not simply an instructional strategy that can be used in any group of students. Development of community in the classroom is required for serious discussion of important social studies issues.
