The central purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the images of the world used in Social Education, the official journal of the National Council for the Social Studies. The starting point of the study was January 1937, when the first issue of the journal appeared; the concluding point was December 1979. The specific research questions asked in the study were: What metaphors were used by the authors to convey images of the world? What arguments were presented by the authors for teaching about the world? How were the viewpoints of the authors related to the images that they presented? What were the relationships between the images and the international events occurring from 1937 through 1979.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The images of the world presented in Social Education can be placed roughly within three time divisions. In the first period, 1937 through 1947, as well as in the last period, 1966 through 1979, the global image was dominant. In the intermediate period, from 1948 through 1965, although the global image appeared less often due to hostility in the world, it remained a significant image ready to reemerge with strength as soon as world tensions abated.

While international events and other factors resulted in some shifts in images over the years, the idea of a global perspective in education remained a pervasive one among social studies educators throughout the forty-three year period. Despite the serious problems produced by world events, including complicated issues and controversies that could have led to disillusionment, many educators remained optimistic about the ability of social studies education to contribute to the acceptance of the global image. Thus, in creating their verbal representations, the authors of the articles in Social Education provided readers with stimulating opportunities to consider the importance of a global approach to the world, as well as to create images of their own. In doing so, they made a significant contribution to social studies education.
