This study investigates language learning strategies of 904 (about half male and half female) Taiwanese students from three educational levels (junior high, senior high, and college) learning English as a foreign language. The study identifies strategies associated with high proficiency and ranks predictors of strategy choice.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The subjects self-reported their frequency of strategy use in the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) Version 7.0. Descriptive statistics computed identified the most and the least frequently used strategies. Stepwise multiple regression was performed to identify what clusters of strategies were associated with higher proficiency level in students. Factor analysis identified underlying dimensions of variables affecting strategy choice. Stepwise multiple regression was run to rank factors associated with strategy choice. Further, MANOVA determined significance of these predictors on strategy use in the six categories of SILL.

The results show that compensation strategies were used most frequently and affective strategies were employed least frequently. The use of cognitive and compensation strategies was positively associated with high proficiency in English. The descending rank of predictors affecting strategy choice was motivation, proficiency, gender, and educational level. For junior high students, the effects of motivation and proficiency were significant, but that of gender was non-significant. For senior high and college students, the effects of motivation, proficiency, and gender were significant on strategy use in the six categories of SILL.
