The study relied heavily on both primary and secondary sources. The material collected was analyzed, classified and presented in the thematic order with the aim of addressing each of the four research questions. Throughout the study, every effort was made to present the evidence that accurately depicts the current supernormal programs in China as well as to interpret and evaluate them.

The major findings were as follows: (1) Four emergent perspectives related to the characteristics of supernormal children were intelligence, ways of learning, personality traits and moral character. Personality characteristics were believed to be related to the children's intellectual development and the findings indicated that most of supernormal children have stronger personality and moral traits than the normal children. (2) The methods and approaches used to identify and select supernormal children included intelligence tests developed in China or introduced from abroad, personality inventories, scholastic tests and specialist evaluation. A combination of all the above was used to identify and select supernormal children and the process was a slow and long one. (3) Findings related to the characteristics of current supernormal programs provided information on three kinds of supernormal programs at different levels. Discussed also in the section were characteristics of the curriculum, faculty arrangement and their responsibilities, as well as the achievements of the students in the programs and after graduation. (4) Concerns and problems related to supernormal education were lack of government funds, lack of teacher training programs, overwhelming teacher responsibilities and lack of a compatible evaluation system to assess the performance and achievement of supernormal children.
