The purpose of the study was to examine the music curricula leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees in Applied Music and Music Education, and to identify NCATE, NASM and teacher certification requirements. The minimum hours required for graduation, the curricular distribution of general education, music, music education and education credit hours, and the content and number of credit hours of required music courses were the criteria which were examined. Questionnaires were sent to public universities with NCATE and NASM accreditation in Applied Music and Music Education. Of the population of 123 institutions, results were received from 115 universities, with 104 of them offering the Applied Music degree and 87 of them offering the Music Education degree. Four of the institutions offered a Comprehensive Musicianship program which had to be independently discussed, since the program had components which could not be directly compared.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The Applied Music and Music Education programs were further categorized according to the type of degree and administrative setting. The study showed similarities and differences among required courses in programs offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Colleges of Fine Arts or Schools of Music, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Departments of Music in Colleges of Arts and Science, a Bachelor of Music degree in Colleges of Fine Arts or Schools of Music, or a Bachelor of Music degree in Departments of Music in Colleges of Arts and Science.

A comparison was also made to find any similarities or differences in degrees offered by Schools of Music and Colleges of Fine Arts with degrees offered by Departments of Music which exist within Colleges of Arts and Science.

The following conclusions were derived from the results of this study: (1) The mean minimum semester hours required for graduation in the Applied Music programs were 127.5. This was less than the 132.8 mean minimum hours required for graduation in the Music Education programs. (2) Thirty percent of the curricular distribution in the Applied Music and Music Education programs were general education requirements. Sixty-four percent of the courses in the Applied Music programs and 45.6 percent of the courses in the Music Education programs were music requirements. The Applied Music programs generally had no course requirements in music education or education. The curricular distribution for music education and education courses in Music Education programs included 10.4 percent of the program being music education courses and 15 percent of the program being education courses. (3) Programs were similar for required music courses in both the Applied Music and Music Education programs except for: (a) The Applied Music programs generally required Counterpoint and Pedagogy, whereas the Music Education programs did not. (b) The Music Education programs generally required Methods courses and Vocal and Choral Techniques, whereas the Applied Music programs did not. (4) There were no major differences found when comparing the required courses for the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music programs. There were also no major differences in required courses found between programs administratively controlled in Colleges of Fine Arts/Schools of Music and programs in Colleges of Arts and Science.
