Students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) have demonstrated a greater level of intercultural understanding relative to students studying in regular state programs. However, a concrete link determining how enrollment in the IBDP and the development of intercultural competence (ICC) is fostered has yet to be found. The primary purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how enrollment in the IBDP impacted the development of ICC of students in grades eleven and twelve at an international school in Luxembourg. A multiple case study design was utilized to garner information from the student perspective. Open-ended, semi-structured interviews were based on the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and survey. A homogeneous purposeful sampling method was used to select the participants of the study. Ten students were selected from grades eleven and twelve from a sampling frame and target population of 160 students. Data for this study were collected through an online survey, the administering of the IDI, and by one-on-one interviews and analyzed using NVivo software to aid in finding relevant themes. Five major themes emerged: (a) open-mindedness was an important aspect of the IBDP, (b) limited working knowledge of the IB Mission Statement and IBLP; (c) core IBDP curriculum was a contributing factor in developing open-mindedness; (d) the school environment was more influential on attitudes than the IBDP; and (e) students overestimated their level of intercultural competence. Three minor themes emerged: (a) active participation in extra and co-curricular activities provided opportunities to develop ICC; (b) living and traveling to different countries shaped student attitudes, and (c) friendships with students from other cultures helped shape attitudes in a positive manner. Three recommendations for practice were: (a) establish improved alignment of the IBLP; (b) support enriched learning experiences identified in core and extra curricular courses; and (c) use the IDI as a tool to improve student learning and professional development for teachers. Recommendations for future research included: (a) a mixed methods study of major theme 2; (b) a quantitative comparative study of major theme 3; and (c) quantitative survey study of major theme 5.
