A causal comparison of the study between a One-Way Immersion Program and a Two-Way Immersion Program for children that are Spanish speakers is analyzed through this study. The researcher studies the difference in academic achievement between the Hispanic students in a One-Way Immersion Program, also known as a Developmental Bilingual Program, and only the Hispanic students of a Two-Way Immersion Program, also known as a Dual Language Program, when both programs run a similar 90/10 model of instruction. The researcher particularly looks at the academic achievement of the Hispanic students when the presence of the English speaking students are taken out of the equation to study if there is a significant difference in academic achievement for those students that have been participating in the same type of 90/10 program with the native English speakers. The study takes in consideration the same type of instruction in both programs, with the same amount of Spanish to English instruction. The study also looks at the effect of the native language spoken in the home and whether it has an impact in the student performance. The study uses four points of data; the ACCESS test, the SUPERA test, the PARCC test, and Home Language Surveys. The samples for the study are within Kane County, Illinois and the school district at the time of the study is considered the third largest in student population in the State of Illinois, where one of the largest Dual Language and Immersion Programs is facilitated within the state.
