Previous research has found that learners' use of tense-aspect morphology is strongly dependent on the aspectual semantics of the verb phrase. However, the processes underlying the acquisition of semantic values of aspectual morphemes are still not well understood. I investigated the acquisition of the semantics of the progressive morphology -ing in past progressive sentences by second language (L2) learners from the point of view of learning as a by-product of the parsing task. The central research question is: How is a semantic value for aspectual -ing computed and identified in L2 sentence processing? Two learning-theoretic hypotheses were formulated: (1) the predicate-based semantics selection hypothesis representing hypothesis-testing and (2) the transition-based semantics selection hypothesis representing a deductive learning. L2 learners of intermediate and advanced English proficiency from typologically different L1s, Korean and Chinese, were engaged in a written film retell, a verb cloze, a judgment task, and two online processing tasks (garden-path and ellipsis tasks).

Across tasks, the results showed coherent patterns distinguishing learners by proficiency but not by L1 background. In processing by higher-proficiency learners, the -ing morphology resulted in the anticipation of activity predicates. Learners' narratives associated -ing and -ed morphology with activities and accomplishment respectively. In processing by lower-proficiency learners, the -ing morphology resulted in the anticipation of an accomplishment predicate. Their production behavior did not show the strong association of -ing morphology with activities. These patterns suggest deductive computations involving a set of transitions in an event schema that includes a culmination. The lower proficiency learners failed to complete all transitions to progressive states/process stages in the processing of past progressive sentences. The higher proficiency group's recovery of analysis, in contrast, signals the reliable computation of progressive states/process stages semantics for past progressive sentences. The findings emphasize the role of deductive parsing in the acquisition of tense and aspect.
