Two types of feedback can be given: positive and negative. Both work to increase good performance--- positive by rewarding good performance, negative by discouraging bad performance. The purpose of this research was to investigate the impact of feedback sign on novices and experts. There are 2 hypotheses. Novices will perform better when receiving positive feedback, and experts will perform better when receiving negative. Participants performed a task in which half were allowed to practice while half were not, separating them into novices and experts. Feedback was given as either positive, negative, or no feedback during performance. Two 2 (expert vs. novice) x 3 (positive vs. negative vs. no feedback) between factors ANOVA were conducted to determine the effect of experience and feedback sign on performance. Significant effects were found for accuracy in relation to feedback sign and experience, in that experts performed better than novices and feedback, regardless of sign improved performance.
