Thesis (D.M.A.)--Shenandoah University, 2015.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the piano blues improvisations by elementary school children in grades one, three, and five. Twelve (N = 12) participants volunteered for this study: four in each grade level. The participants were asked to improvise three choruses of the C 12-bar blues progression, with a four-measure introduction, over an accompaniment that was created by the researcher on Garage Band. The participants performed on a keyboard that was marked with the C blues scale. Their improvisations were recorded into Garage Band. Each participant improvised five times in five different sessions, with the exception of one participant who dropped out of the study after the first session due to scheduling difficulties.

The research questions of this study were: 1. What rhythmic characteristics are present in blues improvisations of elementary school children in grades one, three, and five? 2. What melodic characteristics are present in blues improvisations of elementary school children in grades one, three, and five? 3. How do the blues improvisations of elementary school children in grades one, three and, five adhere to the seven levels of improvisation learning proposed by John Kratus (1991)?

Upon completion of the improvisations, the researcher printed out transcriptions and analyzed them according to specific rhythmic characteristics (pulse accuracy, note/rest value, syncopation, rhythmic patterns, tempo, rhythmic repetition, swing), melodic characteristics (tonal patterns, intervals, melodic repetition, phrasing, augmentation, diminution), and John Kratus' Levels of Improvisation. An improvisation profile was created for each participant to discuss each rhythmic and melodic characteristic and levels of improvisation.

The results indicated that the participants in this study were able to perform all of the rhythmic characteristics and most of the melodic characteristics in their improvisations. Many participants improved their scores throughout the course of the study.
