Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 1987.
Geoffrey of Monmouth's Vita Merlini depicted Merlin so differently than had Geoffrey's Historia that, even in the Middle Ages, people actually distinguished between a Merlin Ambrosius, the loyal servant to Arthur's kingdom, and an entirely separate Caledonian Merlin, a beastman/holyman who was only at home in the forests. This thesis primarily explores the Merlin legend's complex genesis in the Middle Ages while a final section demonstrates how Merlin's early contradictions remain vitually central through the legend's transmission into modern times.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Geoffrey of Monmouth's Vita Merlini depicted Merlin so differently than had Geoffrey's Historia that, even in the Middle Ages, people actually distinguished between a Merlin Ambrosius, the loyal servant to Arthur's kingdom, and an entirely separate Caledonian Merlin, a beastman/holyman who was only at home in the forests. This thesis primarily explores the Merlin legend's complex genesis in the Middle Ages while a final section demonstrates how Merlin's early contradictions remain vitually central through the legend's transmission into modern times.

First, an exploration of Geoffrey's sources leads to speculation about the Caledonian Merlin's primitive aspects. Drawing in part on distant antecedents to the related holy anchorite legend, the thesis argues that the clue to Merlin Sylvester's sardonic laughter exists in Gnosticism and that the prototype of Merlin Sylvester's sister Ganieda may once have served a mistress function.

The important later themes of Merlin's birth and death are also examined: Robert de Boron invented an account of Merlin's engendering which, in addressing and resolving Merlin's pagan, Gnostic and ambivalent aspects, made Merlin central to the Christianization of Arthurian legend. On the other hand, several accounts of Merlin's enserrement emphasized Merlin's sinister aspects, sometimes assigning Merlin culpability in the matter of his own death. The sixth chapter concerns Malory's Merlin who is likewise made culpable, though in a different respect. Depicting Merlin as typically and tragically human, Malory consistently narrowed the schism between Merlin, on the one hand, and Arthur's fallible knights on the other; Malory's Merlin is both a harbinger of fate while also a reflection of its sinister workings.

Chapters seven and eight discuss Tennyson, for whom Merlin emerges as a melancholy victim of his own heightened sensitivity, as well as four representative twentieth century accounts-those of Robinson, Jarnes, Cocteau and T. H. White. The thesis concludes with an overview of Merlin in the nineteenth and, more extensively, in the twentieth century. Often emerging as poet, prophet, demon, madman, and savior simultaneously, he proves himself singularly adaptable to the modern era.
