Three hundred and fifty-six Taiwanese college-level students were selected as subjects to complete the listening section of the Comprehensive English Language Test (CELT) and the Adapted Messic's Hidden Figure Test (AHFT).

The chief findings of the study as related to the research questions were: (1) there was a significant positive relationship between listening comprehension and field independence; (2) although the female students' listening comprehension scores were a little higher than those of the male counterparts, gender was not a factor in the listening comprehension ability; (3) the students' English proficiency in this study also made obvious differences on the listening comprehension test; (4) there was a significant difference on the performance of FD/FI regarding the male vs. female factor; that is, male students are more associated with a higher degree of performance on the measures of FI than female students; and (5) there was no significant correlation between the English proficiency and FD/FI.
