A 64 item questionnaire was administered in February 1997 to male and female college students in Florida and Taipei, Taiwan. The questionnaire asked the students to respond to questions on the extent to which they believed men and women should act or behave in certain ways (e.g. be independent, ambitious, helpful around the house, etc.). They also rated the degree to which they believed others would agree or disagree with each item. An exploratory factor analysis was used to determine which factors from the 64 items could be used for comparison purposes between cultures. Five significant factors were extracted from the 64 items, Relationships, Male Stereotypes, Female Stereotypes, Career and Family. These factors and the resultant statistics are discussed against the background of Taiwanese culture and history.
