After one and a half centuries of British colonization1, in 1997, Hong Kong once again became part of China. Since 1841, citizens of Hong Kong had been forced to live under bi-cultural conditions where Western values intervened in the established Eastern traditions. In this Oral History thesis, I interviewed 21 individuals from Hong Kong, mainland China, and western countries2 to illustrate the cultural impact that colonization has had on Hong Kong. Social change, cultural beliefs, and ethnic identity are all important themes of this thesis. During the years as a colony, Hong Kong established a unique cultural identity through the last century, an identity that has been forged with both Eastern and Western cultural heritage.
