Bible verses, poems, quotes and stories of the unique relationship between daughters and their fathers abound throughout literature, but unique testimonials of the warrior/daughter relationship are scarce, in particular those of eldest or only U.S. daughters witnessing PTSD symptoms of their fathers who served in Vietnam combat. Therefore, before updating the literature with current accounts of such daughters, books, chapters, reviews, magazine and newspaper articles, dissertation abstracts and audio and video sources were scoured in order to vicariously glimpse into this unique relationship.

Since the harrowing impact of the Vietnam War on its veterans demanded inclusion of the PTSD diagnosis in the American Psychological Association's (APA) diagnostic manual in 1980, clinical attention has progressed in accommodating the trans-generational concerns of military families, their friends and acquaintances, co-workers, health providers, and others.

This review begins with literature concerning the history of the term primary PTSD in order that the implications of secondary traumatic stress [disorder] (STS[D]), a prevalent effect of primary PTSD could be understood. This will better equip relational therapists with tools to serve families or others who relate with individuals with symptoms.
