The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among racial identity attitudes, self-esteem, and academic achievement in African American students attending two predominantly White high schools. More specifically, it addressed the multifaceted meta-cognitive variables, which may contribute to academic deficits that numerous African American high school adolescents experience in the classroom. This study employed a quantitative research methodology to compare racial identity attitudes, self-esteem, and academic achievement. The Cross Racial Identity Scale (Vandiver, Cross, Fhagen-Smith et al., 2000) was used to assess participants' level of racial identity development. The Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory was also used to elicit perceptions of personal traits and characteristics in students ages 6 through 18 years. This study found no significant correlations between racial identity and grade point average. However, survey responses indicated that racial identity development and self-esteem show desirable linkages that do exert significant pressure on school success.
