The purpose of this study was to determine how gender impacts principal leadership effectiveness according to Bolman and Deal's Four-Frames Model. This study specifically examined principal leadership effectiveness from both principals' and teachers' perspectives using the following four frames: structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. Bolman and Deal's (2008) structural frame emphasizes rules, roles, goals and policies. The human resource frame relies heavily on skills, relationships and empowerment. The political frame focuses on power, conflict, competition and organizational politics and the symbolic frame is representative of the organization's culture. Together, the frames provide lenses through which leaders can effectively approach an organization. The use of the Four-Frames Model, when comparing genders, is important because organizations have become more complex and harder to understand and manage (Bolman & Deal, 2008). Therefore, utilizing a multiple perspectives, or frames approach makes it possible to view the complex issues facing educational organizations from many points of view. The researcher surveyed principals and teachers from nine school districts in Central Pennsylvania. The sample from this study was comprised of 59 principal and teacher participants. Data was obtained using the Leadership Orientation Instruments --- Self and Other from principals and teachers and was analyzed by frame and gender. The information gained from this study supports leadership effectiveness using multiple perspectives. This study provides a more complete understanding of gender's impact on principal leadership effectiveness according to Bolman and Deal's Four-Frames Model and can be used to improve leadership skills and enhance leadership effectiveness within the organization.
