As the global demand for international higher education continues to grow, international education has become a complex and expanding dimension of higher education. Taiwan, as a developed country, is committed to developing better international educational programs for its students and its institutions of higher education. This mixed methods study explored and identified international students' academic and social learning experiences in Taiwanese institutions of higher education. The study researcher surveyed 106 international students and interviewed 21 participants at three different Taiwanese institutions of higher education: National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), National Kaohsiung University of Applied Science (NKUAS), and Feng Chia University (FCU).

The study results revealed that foreign students experienced a variety of learning and social challenges in Taiwanese institutions of higher education. For example, students reported having difficulty comprehending class materials; communicating with professors, staff members, and peers; and having difficulty in understanding Taiwanese culture and in finding supportive services on campus. Furthermore, foreign students' learning experiences were affected by several factors such as gender, educational level, school, major, nationality, and their studying time in Taiwan. The findings indicated that students would like to see their schools develop and improve school resources and facilities. Suggestions for improvement included developing Chinese and English learning centers, advancing the function of the international student affairs offices, and enhancing English competency of both native students and of staff members. Overall, in order to provide an advantageous learning environment that will attract more international students and help foreign students who are currently studying in Taiwan successfully reach their educational goals, it is important to understand foreign students' learning experiences and offer valuable, effective, and sufficient supportive services.
