This project describes a problem-based learning project focusing on communication between high school principals and students and families from poverty. Review of current research indicated a lack of effective interactions between school administrators and families in poverty. There were many identified factors which contribute to this communication challenge. These communications disconnect often results in strained and/or absent relationships between high school administrators and students and families in poverty.

The project team conducted a literature review in the areas of leadership, communication, and poverty. Following the team's review of literature, the team focused the project on the following concepts: differentiation of communication among varying socio-economic groups, principals' training in working with diverse populations, creating and implementing communication plans, and principals' dissemination of communication with varying socioeconomic groups. The team created interview questions which addressed each identified concept of communication. The team conducted the interviews with ten high school principals in the Heart of Missouri Regional Professional Development Center region.

Following the principal interviews, the team analyzed principal responses for common themes. The common themes identified provided guidance for the product development. The project team developed a communication plan template as well as a communication rubric. The communication plan template was designed to assist practicing principals in implementing positive and effective communication with students and families of low socio-economic status. The communication rubric was designed to guide and monitor principals' communication practices when working with families of low socio-economic status. In addition, the team made recommendations both at the collegial and district level, regarding communication practices with students and families of low socio-economic status. This project supplemented the professional literature base for improved communication practices of principals with student and families of low socio-economic status.
