Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Phoenix, 2013.
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of educators in secondary schools regarding violence with the intention that these experiences may provide solutions in curbing violence against teachers. The study utilized a demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview to guide data collection. The findings of the current study identified emergent themes. Further investigation of 25 interviews revealed that the analyzed themes disclosed five core themes: (1) non-support of parents, (2) unpreparedness of teachers, (3) non-support of administration, (4) disrespect of students, and (5) lack of appropriate policies. The findings of the study revealed the importance of parents in the reduction of violence against educators. According to the results of the study, parents should recognize the importance of their children attending school, being respectful to authoritarian figures, and obeying class and school rules. Addressing violence against teachers would assist the central office and site administrators in making appropriate decisions regarding student discipline. The findings of the research study may benefit secondary schools across the nation.
