Evidence has found a lack of transformational leadership qualities among building level administrators across central Pennsylvania. The purpose of this project study was to identify the leadership styles of principals in central Pennsylvania and ascertain the link between background variables and leadership qualities held by building-level leaders. Guiding questions identified the leadership traits of 153 building-level administrators through the use of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5). The theoretical foundations for this project study included transformational leadership, which improves student and organizational outcomes by shifting the focus from a personal perspective to a team mentality, and the constructive development theory, which focuses on understanding of self in the world. MLQ-5 data were used to identify the leadership tendencies in building level-leaders. The results of the correlation determined a number of weak positive correlations with some significant data. One background variable, number of years of classroom experience, will be the focus for a series of professional development sessions outlined in the project. The project focuses on administrators with less than 6 years of classroom experience and consists of a yearlong professional development program that uses the constructive developmental theory to move building-level principals toward a transformational leadership style. Educational institutions can benefit from this project, as it provides a unique plan for moving leaders with little classroom experience toward a more effectual leadership style. Implications for positive social change involve a specific process that may assist building-level administrators take on effective leadership traits through a professional development experience.
