Cyberbullying involves technology-based taunting and teasing ranging from hurtful comments to threats, vicious rumors, and inappropriate pictures or videos. E-mail, cell phones, text messages, web pages, and instant messages can all be used to cyberbully the target. The purpose of this study was to gather statistics to describe the scope and prevalence of cyberbullying among middle school students in five rural, Northeastern Pennsylvania middle schools. To gather data, the study utilized a survey created in 2007 by Hinduja and Patchin. The data gathered was compared to the original study's data to determine and describe similarities and differences. A factor analysis was completed. An open-ended question was used to solicit responses detailing student experiences. Data was also disaggregated by the variables of age, gender, grade, and race to determine if there were any variations in the prevalence of cyberbullying among these subgroups. Implications of study findings were discussed, providing insight to the scope and prevalence of cyberbullying in the studied population. It is hoped that the results from this study will help educators, parents, and community agencies by developing a better understanding of cyberbullying.
