Thesis (M.S.)--Texas Woman's University, 2004.
The purpose of this study was to assess strategies used by school foodservice directors to recruit and retain non-managerial employees. One hundred forty-two school foodservice directors responded (32%) to a national survey to assess recruitment and retention practices for non-managerial employees. School foodservice positions were vacant on average 4--5 weeks (41%) followed by 2 weeks (29%). Ninety percent of respondents ran self-operated departments. Thirty-seven percent of respondents stated having a problem recruiting or retaining employees. Recruitment of personnel was typically conducted monthly with employee referrals accounting for over half of all new hires. Better pay and benefits were the top reasons employees left the department. The overall turnover rate was 21%. A non parametric Mann Whitney-U test showed that full time turnover was significantly lower (P < .002) when an employee assessment test was used. There was a marginal decrease in employee turnover in relation to the number of ads used.
