Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2004.
This study assessed the nutritional status of 11 female college runners during training. Each participant completed a 24-hour food recall, an eating and lifestyle questionnaire, and weight measurements. Data were used to record nutritional assessments by the researcher. Computerized analysis of food records were compared to the American Dietetic Association's recommendations for athletes. Data revealed six out of 11 respondents' (55 percent) dietary intakes did not meet the recommended energy intakes. Mean intakes of protein, vitamins and minerals met RDAs, except for vitamins E, K, calcium and zinc. Results in this study revealed that there was room for improved nutrient consumption in the athletes examined. Appropriate nutritional intervention and education would improve athletic performance among these athletes.
