Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2004.
Forty-four males, ages 18 to 35 years, were randomly assigned to supplement or placebo groups. The supplement contained creatine, whey protein, amino acids and carbohydrate. Subjects strength trained four days per week for ten weeks. Following each workout, subjects consumed the supplement or non-caloric placebo drink. Twenty-nine subjects completed the study. Muscular strength, measured with one-repetition maximums, for the bench press and 45-degree leg press increased during the strength training program. There were no differences between supplement and placebo groups and no time x group interaction. Muscular endurance, whether measured as the number of repetitions completed with 80% of 1-RM or calculated as estimated external work, increased for the 45-degree leg press but not for the bench press. For both exercises, there were no differences between groups or time x group interaction. The post-exercise supplement did not improve muscular strength and endurance during a short duration strength training program.
