Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 2004.
The purpose of the present study was to develop and validate a sport-specific perfectionism scale titled, Sport Perfectionism Scale (SPS). Eighty-four items were generated based on existing perfectionism theories and scales. Based on experts' and students' review, the number of items on the SPS were reduced to 54. In order to establish content and construct validity, 279 student-athletes (171 females and 108 males) from Division I and III schools completed the 54-item scale. Participants' mean age was 19.75 years (SD = 1.27), ranging from 18 to 26 years. The participants also completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS: Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990), the Belief Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (BMPS: Cox, Enns, & Clara, 2002), and the Attitude Toward Self Scale (ATS: Carver, La Voie, Kuhl, & Ganellen, 1988).

A series of maximum likelihood factor analyses and item analyses supported the four-factor structure with adequate reliabilities. The final version of the SPS consisted of 38 items with four subscales. High Personal Standards consists of 13 items (alpha = .88), Discrepancy consists of eight items (alpha = .89), Fear of Making Mistakes consists of 11 items (alpha = .87), and Expectations of Others consists of six items (alpha = .81). Reliabilities of subscales were adequate for groups split by gender, individual/team sports, and in-season status. Convergent and divergent validity evidence was provided based on the pattern of relationships between the SPS and the FMPS, the BMPS, as well as the ATS. Results showed that the SPS assesses both intra-personal and inter-personal aspects of sport-specific perfectionism. In addition, second-order factor analyses revealed that the SPS assesses both positive and negative aspects of sport-specific perfectionism. For future investigations, cross validations of the SPS were recommended to confirm the four-factor structure. The SPS is recommended as a research tool to explore a sport-specific perfectionism.
