Opportunities for training and development are major factors in decisions regarding the career choices people make. Despite the importance, however, many research studies on job satisfaction do not address satisfaction with workplace training as an element of overall job satisfaction, and many job satisfaction survey instruments do not include a "satisfaction with workplace training" component. This study examined the relationship between satisfaction with employer-provided workplace training and overall job satisfaction.

Many job satisfaction studies have been conducted on professions, for which a majority of job duties are learned prior to the start of employment. This study is different in that it focused on technical and customer service representatives, who provide service to their organization's wholesale and/or retail customers. Unlike professional occupations, job duties for these types of positions are employer-specific, and employees in these types of positions rely on their employers to provide them with the introductory and ongoing training they need to perform their jobs.

Through the use of multiple regression analyses, a significant relationship was found between job training satisfaction and overall job satisfaction. Using a multiple regression model, time spent in training, training methodologies, and type of training were determined to be significant in their relationships to job training satisfaction.

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the methodology used in training made a significant difference in job training satisfaction. Most preferred by respondents were methodologies that involved face-to-face interaction provided by an instructor or job coach. In examining demographic statistics, temporary or contract employees were more satisfied with the on-the-job training they received than permanent employees of the organization for which customer service was provided. A two-way ANOVA showed significant interactions between job tenure and employment type (customer service representative or technical service representative) when examined with job training satisfaction.

The results of this study are significant to the fields of workplace training and development, both from research and practical standpoints. A significant relationship was found between workplace training and job satisfaction in a category of employee not previously studied. Specific components of workplace training that relate to job training satisfaction were identified. Recommendations were made for practitioners and researchers in the fields of training and human resource development, as well as for managers of employees working in customer and technical service occupations. Findings extend prior research on employee training and development, job training, satisfaction, and job satisfaction, and identify specific areas for additional research.
