The nutritional quality of childcare menus is a growing concern as the number of children participating in daily childcare increases. The objectives of this study were to determine the overall nutrient content of lunch meals from childcare facilities participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), to determine what fruits and vegetables were listed on the lunch menus vs. those reported on the questionnaires, and to describe the characteristics of the childcare facilities. Lunch meals from 49 CACFP-funded childcare facilities were analyzed. This study found that the 49 childcare lunch meals were inadequate in providing some nutrients, but excessive in providing others. To improve the quality of childcare menus, childcare teachers, foodservice staff, and parents need to be educated in child nutrition requirements before being allowed to have input on the menus. Also, childcare menus should offer a greater variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
