While a selected bibliography of approximately five hundred sources is included at the end of the project, a number of sources were of particular help. Jonathan Edwards's The Nature of True Virtue displays how believers and unbelievers are able to recognize and appreciate beauty, which Edwards argues is objective. Steven B. Cowan's Five Views on Apologetics describes the most prevalent contemporary apologetic methods, and gives clear arguments for and against each view. Cowan edited the work, which includes top advocates for each view presenting their case. C. Stephen Evans's The Historical Christ and the Jesus of Faith was helpful for the section on epistemology. A number of commentaries were helpful for the section on the New Testament, although no one in particular stands out. The same is true for the section on postmodernism. In both cases the reader should simply consult the footnotes. Plato's Symposium, Augustine's Confessions, and Aquinas's Summa Theologica were all helpful on how beauty may be thought of objectively in general, and in particular with reference to God, art, etc. Athenagoras's Embassy for the Christians shows how a beautiful, Christian community is appealing to onlookers. Other helpful sources, especially for the original idea of the work, include Patrick Sherry's Spirit and Beauty, Doug Blount's "Apologetics and the Ordinances of the Church," and his "Uberhobbits: Tolkien, Nietzsche, and the Will to Power."

Early in my Ph.D. studies (begun 1999), I heard a professor speak of what he was calling an "aesthetic" approach to apologetics. Intrigued by the idea, I began to develop my own version of it. In 2002 I presented a paper at the Southwest regional meeting of the Evangelical Philosophical Society entitled, "A Beautiful Life: An Essay on Apologetic Method." I continued reading and discussing with fellow students and colleagues issues in apologetics, aesthetics, postmodernism, and epistemology, and in 2003 settled on pursing the topic in my dissertation.

Several conclusions were reached throughout the study. First, Postmoderns appreciate beauty much more than they appreciate argument, evidence, and reason. Second, most contemporary apologetic methods fail to use beauty for apologetics. Third, beauty is objective, and it is recognizable and attractive to most people, not just to postmoderns. Fourth, Scripture and other historical sources repeatedly endorse (some implicitly, some explicitly) beauty as helpful for apologetics.
