Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the leading causes of death in The Bahamas, and diet, obesity, and lack of exercise are all independent risk factors for CHD. This study examined the relationships of dietary patterns and exercise habits to the occurrence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in 146 Bahamian adolescent females (BAF), aged 13-17 years who were at least one year since onset of menarche. The study sample was classified into four groups including underweight, normal-weight, overweight, and obese based on body mass index (BMI).Subjects--Topical Terms:

Participants completed two 24-hour food recalls and a Health Habits Questionnaire to determine dietary intake and food frequency habits. Self-administered questionnaires were used to determine physical activity (PA) and exercise habits, as well as attitudes toward obesity and physical education. Twelve-hour fasting blood samples were taken to measure biochemical variables including serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoproteins (HDL-C), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) and TC/HDL-C ratio. Anthropometric measurements including height, weight, waist and hip circumferences and triceps and subscapular skinfold measurements were taken. Body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and percent body fat were calculated. Statistical procedures included analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan's multiple range tests, Pearson's product moment correlations, and t-tests.

Major findings indicated that BAF had less than desirable nutritional behaviors which were characterized by high intakes of total and saturated fat with other macronutrients being qualitatively unbalanced. Biochemical assessment revealed abnormal lipid levels in more than half of the sample with a mean TC level of 187 mg/dL

16.4 mg/dL. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures, HDL-C, and anthropometric measurements were significantly more adverse in obese adolescents. All anthropometric measurements, except WHR, were negatively correlated with HDL-C and positively correlated with TC/HDL-C. Pearson correlations showed no significant correlations between lipid parameters and PA. Significant correlations were observed between participation in varsity sports and HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratio.

Findings from this study suggest an urgent need for health promotion among BAF including dietary and PA intervention. Recommendations for intervention include nutrition education; the adoption of a healthy eating program; development of the physical education curriculum; and the development of a national sports and fitness program.
