Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2006.
Community colleges enroll a large and diverse population. Dwindling public funds force two-year colleges to place great attention to student persistence (Summers, 2003). Of the many factors which influence student persistence, college major appears to be an important factor (DesJardins, Kim, & Rzonca, 2003). With mixed findings in current research, and limited research focusing on two-year colleges, many researchers have called for further studies of college major, and student persistence (Grimes, 1997; Hagedorn, Maxwell, & Hampton, 2001; Sang & Glick, 2004; St. John, Hu, Simmons, Carter, & Weber, 2004).

This study examined the relationship between student demographic characteristics, the choice of college major, and community college student success. The choice of college major was found to be a significant influence on student persistence, especially with regard to vocational programs. Additionally, differences by gender and ethnicity were found in the choice of college major as well as in the patterns of student persistence. There was no significant relationship found between parental occupational status, the choice of college major and student success.
