Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics and the career values of college students in the northern Midwest. This study looked specifically at college students' generation cohort, gender, race, and family diversity in relation to their career values. Career values served as the dependent variable and college student demographic characteristics of generation cohort, gender, race, and family diversity served as independent variables. This quantitative, quasi-experimental study utilized a survey methodology. Two hundred thirteen participants comprising 28% of the study population completed the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire, which measured six values. The results of the data analyses suggest there is no statistical significance in career values with regard to generation cohort, gender, and family diversity. There were statistically significant differences with regard to race and career values. Status and Altruism had statistically significant differences between racial groups. Such differences were in all probability precipitated by differences in attitudes, behaviors, and culture, which are all integral components of one's value system. The research findings from this study offered insight into the need for further research regarding racial groups and career values.
