An attempt is made to describe the transformations suffered by the education system in a totalitarian society, namely Romania during Nicolae Ceausescu's 'Golden Epoch,' with emphasis on the mystification and falsification of History. The evolution of the Communist Historical discourse is traced from its emergence as a need of legitimacy to its role as the foundation of Ceausescu's personality cult. The indoctrinating role of the Communist mass organizations, as well as that of the 'comrade teacher' and the History textbooks, is thoroughly examined. Further on, the paper describes the portrait of the Communist 'new man,' the goal of forty-five years of state conducted social-reengineering. Finally the thesis concludes that the experiment has been largely successful and its results are still seen in today's Romania.
