In recent history, Laos and Vietnam have experienced extensive social, economic and political disruption which have hindered their efforts to improve the health and nutrition situation of preschool children. UNICEF estimates indicate a high prevalence of undernutrition and child mortality. However, studies examining the nutritional status of children are scarce and are limited to descriptive reports. The papers presented here are the first to report results from multivariate analyses of preschool children's food consumption patterns and nutritional outcome. Anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin were collected in Laos between 1989-1991 and in Vietnam between 1985-1987. Data on food consumption patterns, including wild food intake, were collected for children and women in Laos in 1991.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Analyses of dietary factors indicate a positive association between wild food intake and several measures of diet quality in children and women. Household variables associated with dietary consumption patterns include having stored food, satisfactory family health, household size indicators of household economic status and maternal education. Wild food intake was positively associated with children's hemoglobin and negatively associated with height for age. Food variety was positively associated with hemoglobin. Other dietary variables did not display associations with children's nutritional status.

In Laos, during four survey rounds and among different age groups, as many as 63% and 65% of children under 60 months were underweight or stunted, respectively. Growth velocity was poor, with up to 60% and 50% falling below a Z-score of

for weight and height increments, respectively. Child hemoglobin and paternal education were positively associated with attained growth: child age exhibited a negative association. Lao Loum children and girls had better nutritional status. Attained growth was worse among children experiencing diarrhea, respiratory infection and malaria.

In Vietnam, during four survey rounds, as many as 82% and 80% of children under 72 months fell below a Z-score of

for weight for age and height for age, respectively. A maximum of 44% and 57% of children fell below a Z-score of

for growth velocity (weight and stature, respectively). Positive predictors of attained growth were hemoglobin level and sex (males having better nutritional status). Household size, weaning practices and household illness were not associated with attained growth.
