Thesis (M.S.)--Rush University, 2011.
The purpose of this survey research project was to assess inpatient knowledge, use and perceptions of probiotics and prebiotics at an urban medical center. Of those that stated familiarity with probiotic and prebiotic terms, 55% chose the correct definition for probiotics and 67% for prebiotics. The most common products being consumed were Activia(TM) yogurt for probiotics and Skinny Cow(TM) ice cream sandwiches for prebiotics. Participants thought probiotics and prebiotics to be helpful for digestion/gut health, constipation, and immune health; however, most subjects were consuming probiotics and prebiotics to taste or try them. Participants greater than 65 years old were more likely to believe that probiotics and prebiotics are harmful, and that the health claims on probiotic packages cannot be trusted. In conclusion, patients are consuming probiotics (49%) and prebiotics (43%), but do not have a clear understanding of their efficacy and safety.
