Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2011.
An eating and lifestyle patterns questionnaire was employed to analyze the use of dietary supplements and evaluate the eating habits of 22 women endurance runners. A 2-day food record, eating and lifestyle patterns questionnaire, and height/weight measurements were used. Computerized analysis of food records were compared to the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for kilocalories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamin D, and calcium. The majority of runners met ≥ 75% of their DRIs; however, kilocalories and vitamin D may be at risk. Less than 23% of the runners achieved ≥ 75% of their estimated energy requirements (EER). Forty different supplements were identified. The results suggest the importance of sports dietitians to educate athletes on appropriate food selection and timing.
