Thesis (M.S.)--D'Youville College, 2011.
Originally, this study intended to determine if a previously developed Interaction Analysis Tool (IAT) has the ability to monitor the verbal interactions of nutrition counseling sessions involving eating disorder patients. Due to difficulties obtaining consent with this population, a general mix of dietary clients was used. A total of 12 counseling sessions were tape recorded and reviewed. Data analysis revealed a change in verbal patterns from the first third to the last third of each session. Client talk did not reach an optimal level of 55--65% in any of the sessions; however, 7 out of 12 rated for a high level of collaboration. These results demonstrate the IAT's ability to identify various verbalizations and the establishment of a collaborative relationship.
