Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, 2011.
Cyber security is inevitable in hospital information network environment due to the advancement in cutting edge health information technology. Everyday, new applications are emerging to make sensitive health care information stored in shared resources to make it easily accessible in a networked environment. Hospital systems today are more interested to achieve "digital health care" status and are investing more to have state-of-the art technologies for faster and easier accessibilities of readily available patient care information in an electronic information network. Their overly dependency on Internet for faster accessibility and communication and lack of interest to protect networked resources and information residing therein have already positioned them as more vulnerable to cyber attacks. Modern hospital systems are depending on "generic" network security mechanisms such as perimeter firewalls and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) which have already been proven to be inefficient due to their inability to detect novel cyber attacks.

A number of research have shown promising outcomes in detecting novel cyber attacks by applying data mining based anomaly detection techniques but most of them are not suitable for real-time cyber attack detection in a hospital network environment. This dissertation work presents design and implementation of a probabilistic data mining based cyber attack defense technique suitable for hospital information network. Utilizing weekly basis real-world hospital network traffic data for training the detection algorithm showed promising detection capabilities compared to a commercially used Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). The cyber defense technique developed in this dissertation work also had the capability of generating real-time cyber attack alert notification to administrator.

The entire system was implemented within a database where network traffic were captured and stored. An evaluation on one day period of incoming traffic data (total 4647 flows) from a real hospital network showed a detection of 15 unusual network traffic where the commercial IPS detected only one attack from the same data. The dissertation work achieved its research goal and it has the potential to complement existing cyber security mechanisms in order to achieve a more comprehensive cyber defense technique.
