Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northern Illinois University, 2011.
The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of effective teaching as perceived by undergraduate adjunct faculty members in a single large proprietary university. This case study used survey research, which is ideal for gathering data from a large population regarding attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and characteristics (Creswell, 2002). In a pilot study an expert panel of undergraduate adjunct members identified the characteristics of effective teaching most important to them, which were then used to develop a questionnaire. Surveys were administered and data were obtained from 441 undergraduate faculty members teaching general education courses in one institution. Three factors were identified through an exploratory factor analysis, Regard for the Student, Instructor Competence, and Instructional Proficiency, which explain over half the variance. Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient for the full data was robust. The internal consistency reliability of the three factors was within an acceptable range of 0.7 and above.

However, the factors identified as most important to adjunct faculty members differ from those of full-time faculty members in that there is a large number of additional comments in the survey from the participants about a caring adjunct faculty member that reinforced Regard for the Student as the most important factor. The various facets of Regard for the Student are not prominent components of Student Evaluations of Teaching Effectiveness (SETEs).

Responses to supporting research questions regarding perceptions of adjunct faculty members based on their demographics of gender, age, ethnicity, level of education, years of teaching, and teaching discipline were also analyzed. In the majority of cases, there were no statistically significant differences based on demographics. This survey can be considered a reliable and valid measure of characteristics of effective teaching as perceived by adjunct faculty. Faculty training and development programs for adjunct faculty should address Regard for the Student, Instructor Competence, and Instructional Proficiency to assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of adjunct faculty teaching. Additional studies are required to strengthen these findings, which were derived from a single case.
