Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2010.
With the recent popularity of Internet social software websites, smartphones, and video games, communication patterns of the millennial generation have become more collaborative and multimedia in nature. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the learning styles of students had also evolved to a Web 2.0 standard. A university level course using social software tools provided historical data which were analyzed using a case study approach. The homework assignments for this course required students to submit videos, slides, and comments to YouTube, Second Life, and Facebook respectively. Using Gardner's multiple intelligences as the conceptual framework, the research question focused on the extent that millennial students favored each of the different intelligences in their learning activities. An examination of the videos and slides revealed the choices made by each student regarding their preferred intelligences for education. Patterns and themes identified from written comments in the Facebook page were triangulated with the observed YouTube and Second Life data in an iterative explanation building process. Results revealed millennial generation students. preference for a blended combination of visual, musical, kinesthetic, logical, linguistic and personal intelligences for their course assignments. This study contributes to social change by informing educators of the need to reduce their reliance on linguistic readings and lectures and move towards a delivery model that is more inclusive of nonlinguistic activities to match the learning styles of the millennial generation student.
