Thesis (M.S.)--University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 2006.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aquatic balance training on balance, mobility, and strength in a group of community-dwelling older adults at risk for falls. Eligible participants were assigned to a non-exercising usual activities (UA) group (n=11) or an aquatic balance-training (ABT) group (n=14) on a first-come-first-served basis. The ABT group attended 60-minute classes twice a week for twelve consecutive weeks. A 2 (Group) x 2 (Time) ANCOVA with repeated measures on the second factor was used to determine if group differences were evident as a function of time on measures of balance, strength, mobility, and balance-related self-confidence. The results indicated that no significant group differences were evident at post-test for any of the performance measures except balance-related self-confidence (p<.01). The non-significant findings can be attributed to the lack of statistical power resulting from a small sample and non-randomization of participants to groups.
