Thesis (M.S.S.W.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 1987.
This associational study examines the influences of gender, religious beliefs, an individual's past experiences with death, and the presence or absence and utilization of social support on the level of acute mourning and unresolved grief in the family members of murder victims. A 50-item questionnaire was administered to 72 members of a Victims of Violence support group. There was a significant relationship between gender and the level of unresolved grief. Male scores indicated a higher level of unresolved grief than female scores. Additionally, an inverse relationship was discovered between the level of religious beliefs and the amount of unresolved grief. The more religious a person, the lower the level of unresolved grief. When the social support variable was correlated with levels of unresolved grief, a significant relationship was found, suggesting support lowers the degree of unresolved grief. There was no significant relationship between acute mourning and any of the independent variables. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)Subjects--Topical Terms:
