520 $a Morgan is dead, but I must talk to her as if she were alive. Otherwise she will be dead. This is a conundrum. People make noises we call filler words, when I talk about her. I think of her all the time. Everything triggers an emotion of her, seeing her pictures brings back the past memories. My whole apartment is decorated with only her pictures, I took everybody else's pictures out of the frames and replaced them with her pictures. Now I can gaze upon only her.
520 $a I took a year off from school, this time allowed me to consider re-doing my dissertation. I came to the conclusion that I would write a book about Morgan's murder. A book about my reaction to her death and the various stages of grief. This would enable me to rebound or to somewhat heal from the shock of her death.
520 $a I chose the format of free verse and also some prose poems. I call them vignettes into private moments of thought. I used narrative style as I was telling a story, also I wanted the reader to share in a conversation. Especially the reader who himself/herself had experienced sudden tragic death of a loved one.
520 $a Grief is all-encompassing. I try to show in my writing that anything can trigger an outpouring of memory. Anything can also trigger an outpouring of grief. Prolonged grief is self-destructive and disabling. I needed to use my love of writing creatively to come to terms with the murder and the grief. Murder is akin to a slap in the face. It paralyzes you. You need an outlet and writing is another form of verbalizing. I wanted Morgan's story to be told. That is to make people aware of the tragic results of domestic violence. This is also an educational work. A way of reaching the public to raise awareness of domestic violence and its horrendous repercussions. She had a restraining order which she rescinded. This was like she signed her death warrant. Research has shown that many women who rescind restraining orders are then murdered. Those who commit domestic violence wish to exert ultimate control over their victims. As I wrote in one of the poems, I didn't want Morgan to be just a collection of ashes in a cemetery. I wanted people to read about her. To make sense of her death, if this is possible, that is making sense of a tragedy that didn't have to happen.
