The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between religious orientation and attitudes toward persons with mental illness in a population of 117 students at a religiously oriented college. The current study used the conceptualization of religious orientation set forth by Batson and Ventis (1982) which consists of three dimensions: Religion as Means/External, Religion as End/Internal, and Religion as Quest/Interactional. Attitudes toward persons with mental illness were measured using the conceptualization of Taylor and Dear (1981), which presents four constructs: Authoritarian, Benevolence, Community Mental Health Ideology, and Social Restrictiveness.

Long-standing research on religiosity and prejudice has shown a consistent positive relationship between the two variables. These findings are difficult to understand in light of the teaching of world religions to love one's neighbor and to be beneficent to others who are suffering. Recent research has shown that the more clearly religiosity has been conceptualized, the better understood the dimensions of religiosity that relate to prejudice have become. In essence, the way in which people used their religion---their orientation to religion---relates to their level of prejudice, with religious orientations guided by external rewards, such as social supports, being more closely linked to negative attitudes toward others, and internally driven or questing orientations being related to more tolerance of others.

Stepwise multiple regression and correlational analyses showed significant positive relationships between the Quest orientation and Authoritarian attitudes toward persons with mental illness. In addition, social desirability, in the current study, was shown to be a positive predictor of low levels of Benevolence, and less of a Community Mental Health Ideology toward persons with mental illness. There was no significant relationship between the Means/External and End/Internal dimensions of religious orientation and attitudes toward persons with mental illness. These findings may suggest that religious orientation is a less salient factor in predicting attitudes toward persons with mental illness than socio-cultural factors and social cognitive factors, both created by a combination of the social norms of one's environment and one's own beliefs and perceptions about mental illness.

This study reinforces results of previous studies that show that the relationship between religious orientation or religiosity and attitudes and beliefs about others may be mediated by social, cultural, and personal experiences and perceptions. This underscores the need for further examination of the factors affecting attitudes toward persons with mental illness, and using religious orientation as one of many factors to explore in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding in this area.
