The dissertation examines how, in the period 1270--1400, medical theorists writing at universities in northern Italy theorized the nature, functions, and physiology of the sensitive or "animal" soul. It proceeds through close analytical reading of texts by four authors: the arts master and logician Gentile da Cingoli (fl. ca. 1290); the physician, philosopher, and astrologer Pietro d'Abano (d. 1316); the Florentine doctor Tommaso del Garbo (d. 1370); and the celebrated master of arts and medicine Giacomo da Forli (d. 1414).

The dissertation focuses on these authors' treatments of two closely connected subjects in scholastic natural philosophy: (1) the "interior senses" (sensus interiores), their operations, and their localization; (2) the "species in the soul" (species in anima) as cause of physical change. It also gives special attention to the four authors' conceptions of the species in anima as a medicinal agent, able to augment therapy, or even to bring recovery from illness without the doctor's physical intervention.

The texts examined include Pietro's Conciliator, d. 135 and d. 156; Pietro's Expositio Problematum Aristotelis, particle 7; six questions from Tommaso's Summa medicinalis, and two of Giacomo's questions on Galen's Tegni. Editions of these texts are included in appendices. These editions are from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century manuscripts at the Biblioteca Malatestiana and Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana.

The dissertation reaches three conclusions. First, Italian scholastic medical writing on the animal soul in the period 1270--1400 reflects a general movement among scholastic physicians from the assimilation of newly available Greek and Arabic authoritative texts to rigorous analysis and criticism of received doctrine. Second, in Italian scholastic medical discourse after 1348, acknowledgment that the species in anima can by itself alter bodies other than the soul's own disappears from accounts of the power of imagination posited in opposition to Avicenna. Third, after 1348 Italian medical theorists grew increasingly ambivalent toward the standard Avicennian scheme of the interior senses.
