Thesis (M.A.)--The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 2005.
This thesis examines the various ways the idea of gender is deployed in research on children who witness domestic violence. It is informed by the idea that positive adaptation to trauma is facilitated by a flexible orientation to gendered behaviors. The thesis reviews sociological and psychological articles that focus on how children adapt to domestic violence. Articles are reviewed from the past twenty years. Those articles that identify gender as a variable in adaptation are culled from the initial review. The articles are coded according to three heuristic categories: gender absent, gender descriptive, or gender analyzed.

Next, each article identified as gender descriptive or gender analyzed is examined to discern how gender is used descriptively and analytically. Following this step, each article coded as gender analyzed is reviewed a second time to identify how gender is used in both the study design and in the interpretation of the results to elucidate how children who witness domestic violence succeed or fail to adapt to this trauma. Finally, recommendations are proposed for therapeutic group work with children in trauma that utilizes the idea of gender flexibility.
