For several years psychologists addressed a phenomenon called resilient personalities by acknowledging the effects of personality characteristics combined with outside influences. Psychological research acknowledged external influences from community, family, and society. This perspective did not isolate the influence of social forces. Likewise, few sociologists have specifically addressed the phenomena known to psychologists as resilience. This created a gap in resilience research because the concept of personal resilience was coined and studied almost exclusively in the psychological cannon. My thesis addresses resilience from the sociological perspective.

This study explores the relationship between social control factors and resilient personalities in adolescent aged high school students. Multivariate linear regression is used to analyze self-report surveys from 230 high school students residing in two of the poorest counties in Georgia. Approximately 80% of the participants are African American. Contrary to previous research, which presents social forces as a small influence on resilience, this research suggests resilience coexists with strong social control.

Interpreting this data combines social control theories with psychological scales that measure and predict resilience. The results indicate significant relationships between resilience and some aspects of social controls. The findings suggest further sociological study of resilience would be beneficial in understanding this phenomenon.
