The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between First Generation College Students and Non-First Generation College Students with respect to generation status, college adjustment, living status, and projected grade point averages of freshmen college students who attended one private college. Five scales of college adjustment were examined: Academic Problems, Career Problems, Family Problems, Psychological Problems, and Substance Abuse. This study examined the differences between First Generation College Students (FGCS) and Non-First Generation College Students (Non-FGCS) and each of the five scales of college adjustment. In addition, this study examined the differences between living status (commuter or resident), hours of employment, declaration of major, gender, and ethnicity of FGCS and Non-FGCS.

The findings of this study indicated that in some cases First Generation College Students experience greater difficulty with college adjustment as compared to Non-First Generation College Students. The data indicated that FGCS experience greater difficulties with academic problems and family adjustment than do Non-FGCS. Another finding of this study was that male First Generation College Students reported greater difficulties in career planning and substance abuse as compared to female First Generation College Students. The findings of this study suggest that institutions of higher education need to work on improving academic, career, and family adjustment services for First Generation College Students.
