The purpose of this study was to compare the success rate of mathematics community college students who have enrolled in a traditional classroom course versus their counterparts in online courses over several academic years. This study focused on available demographic characteristics of both populations and identified: (1) which students select online and traditional courses; and (2) profile factors that associate with student success in course achievement. This study also examined the demographic characteristics of all students and their associated success in online courses offered in the community college system of California. Repeated measures of course achievement and other categorical demographics for academic years 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2003-04 were compiled from surveys which provided comparisons such as age, gender, ethnicity, and course success.
